Association: State loan program for municipal utilities insufficient

The loan program planned by the Schleswig-Holstein state government for private, social and municipal companies with a volume of 500 million euros is not sufficient from the point of view of the Association of Energy and Water Industries (VSHEW). "There are around 108,000 companies and more than 50 municipal utilities in Schleswig-Holstein," said the association's chairman, Andreas Wulff on Wednesday. "In view of these dimensions, the 500 million euros could be used up within a few months." In addition, the government's concept lacked support measures for individual households in financial distress.

The loan program announced by Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) on Tuesday in view of the energy crisis and sharply increased prices is to be secured by state guarantees. It is also intended to support municipal utilities, which are particularly suffering from the high energy purchase prices and are threatened with high payment defaults.

The VSHEW, which represents around 60 municipal and municipal utilities in the state, appealed to citizens, institutions and companies to save energy. "The 20 percent energy savings required nationwide are possible without major sacrifices in comfort if everyone pulls together," said Wulff, according to a statement.
