Cardboard and packaging will be collected daily in Madrid and the containers will be buried at 30 points in the center

The main squares in the center of Madrid will erase garbage containers from their image. Starting next year, the underground container system for paper-cardboard, glass and containers will be implemented in 30 visible locations in the Central district. This is one of the main novelties of the new waste collection contract that also contemplates a greater frequency of emptying the containers from this November. Thus, dealers will increase from 4 days a week to 7 for paper-cardboard and packaging. The organic fraction will be maintained on a daily basis. And the rest must be adapted to the generation demand (batteries, glass, textile waste...).

An important extension of commercial cardboard collection is also contemplated, door to door, in areas with a high density of shops, to prevent these establishments from depositing this waste in containers, since these containers are more oriented towards paper-cardboard from the domestic sphere.

In the field of textile waste collection, the aim is to considerably increase the number of containers in the city, in order to provide a more complete service.

In the case of markets and food galleries, a second collection will be carried out in the afternoon shift, from Monday to Saturday (except holidays) in order to be able to evacuate all the garbage generated. This service will collect, at least, the packaging and biowaste fractions. The contract also includes, as has been the case up to now, the collection of waste that is the responsibility of local health centers (hospitals, health centres, clinics...), with specific equipment for this waste, which guarantees proper management separately from the rest of the waste.

Among the different benefits that the new contract brings with it, the renovation and aesthetic homogenization of all the waste containers permanently installed on public roads stands out. All this furniture will have a new image and design, respecting the identity colors of each of the fractions. The height of the containers will be reduced from the current 175 centimeters to a maximum of 150 centimeters, resulting in a lower visual impact on the city and greater ease of use. In total, a family of models will be created for the containers of five surface fractions: containers (yellow container), paper-cardboard (blue), glass (green), bio-waste (brown) and other non-recyclable waste (orange). The replacement of approximately 30,000 containers in the city is expected.
