The Madrid City Council has started this Monday the repair and conditioning works of the Raimundo Fernández Villaverde bridge, which will cause, for the moment, the cutting of one lane for each direction (the interior) in this infrastructure because numerous vehicles circulate each working day.
These tasks, which will be carried out by the Works and Equipment Area, will be carried out after the conservation services have been observing small subsidence in the areas of the roadway approaching the bridge, both on the abutment on the side of Calle Joaquín Costa as, to a greater extent, on the abutment on the side of Calle Orense. That is why the municipal technicians have decided to act so that the problem does not lead to a decrease in security.
The repair work will consist of the excavation and removal of existing fill material under the roadway; renovation of the drainage system that collects the water from the bridge deck; filled with concrete and gravel; Execution on the filling of an upper slab of reinforced concrete for load distribution and waterproofing of the slab and replacement of the asphalt.
At the same time, the upper part of the bridge deck, which is deteriorated and aged by the passage of time, will be refurbished. In this case, the intervention contemplates the renovation of the central reservation, with the demolition of the current one and the construction of a new one, improving the water collection points of the drainage system; restoration of the existing railings on access walls and deck side edges; execution of new expansion joints in the deck; replacement of the current metal barrier with a new, more aesthetic vehicle containment system adjusted to the urban environment and European requirements, and renovation of the existing road surface with milling and extension of a new asphalt wearing course and horizontal signage.
Both actions to repair the access areas and to refurbish the deck will be carried out at the same time through successive phases in the summer months, with less impact on mobility in the area. The works have an expected execution period of four months and have a budget of 913,000 euros.
