Statistics: WHO: 90 percent fewer corona deaths than in February

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of officially recorded corona deaths has fallen sharply since last winter. Around 9,400 deaths related to Covid-19 were reported worldwide last week, as WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported in Geneva. That's almost 90 percent down from February, when this year's weekly high of 75,000 was reached.

Even if this is a positive development, too many people are still dying "from a preventable and treatable disease," Tedros said at a press conference. "Covid-19 is still a pandemic," said WHO expert Maria Van Kerkhove. In the previous week, around 2.1 million new infections were registered worldwide, with a high number of unreported cases being assumed.
