What to give away?: Technology highlights under the Christmas tree

Every year - the question arises as to what you can do to make your family, friends or yourself happy at Christmas. When it comes to electronic devices, the selection is particularly large. Whether in the kitchen, the living room or on the go: the range of technology highlights for yourself or others is enormous. A small selection.

In 2022, too, the smartphone market will have plenty of innovation and an almost immeasurable selection of devices. All major brands presented new flagships during the year: Apple's iPhone 14, Google's Pixel 7, Motorola's Edge30 series or Samsung's Galaxy S22. Which version and which device it should be also depends somewhat on the size of the purse: The price range for the device families mentioned is between around 400 euros (Edge30 neo) and 1,450 euros (iPhone 14 Pro Max). In terms of value for money, the Pixel 7 from Google is particularly impressive for 649 euros. Insider tip: If it doesn't have to be the very latest device and you can still find discounted remainders from wholesalers, the predecessor, the Pixel 6, is the device of choice.

Amazon recently released the fifth generation of its Echo Dot. If you don't yet have a smart speaker but would like one, you can currently get the latest Alexa version for around 30 euros without and 40 euros with an integrated clock. Meanwhile, Google released its latest WiFi router in the fall: The Nest Wifi Pro costs a little over 200 euros, but provides the latest WiFi 6E standard and a future-proof basis for the smart home. The device was designed to be "Matter" compatible, a new standard for smart home devices supported by all major vendors (Amazon, Apple, Google, Samsung).

It is the first Christmas before the Playstation 5 is in stock at the beginning of December, at least at some retailers such as Amazon. Sony's console has been out of stock since it first appeared in November 2020 and, at best, is available at completely overpriced prices. Many consolers and those who want to become one should be particularly pleased that this year is different. Depending on the version, the Playstation 5 is available from around 600 euros. If the delivery doesn't work out by Christmas, there could at least be a voucher under the Christmas tree, because several bundle promotions will appear at the end of January, but can already be pre-ordered.

If you don't want to spend hundreds of euros on smartphones, consoles or televisions and give them away, look around for smaller gadgets that are no less useful. For example the Bluetooth box JBL Flip 6, which is available from around 120 euros. It delivers powerful sound for up to twelve hours and is dust and waterproof according to IP67. The latter also applies to Sony's SRS-XB13 Bluetooth speaker, which is available for around half the price of the Flip 6. It's also worth taking a look at Teufel's Boomster box. It promises a battery life of up to 18 hours and is protected against water jets according to the IPX5 standard.
