Mustache Trend: The mustache is back

At first glance, the current cinema films "Top Gun: Maverick", "The Gray Man", "Bullet Train" and "The Greatest Beer Run Ever" seem to have little in common. A closer look at the male protagonists, however, reveals an unusual similarity: a surprising number of them wear moustaches. And these are not older men, mind you, but men in their thirties and forties.

Miles Teller, 35, grew a mustache to play Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw on Top Gun: Maverick.

Fellow actor Chris Evans (41) has had a beard for a long time, but shaved it off for "The Gray Man". A classic mustache remained.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson (32) is also nothing new with a beard, but with a mustache like in “Bullet Train” it is.

Ex-teen star Zac Efron (34) did without facial hair for a long time. But now he melts hearts as the moustachioed Jon "Chickie" Donohue in "The Greatest Beer Run Ever".

The four men are just a few of many who have recently grown a mustache. On the TikTok platform, which is mainly used by teenagers and young adults, you can find them under the hashtag

If you want to try the trend, here are some things to keep in mind:

The first thing to do is find out which mustache hairstyle you like and flatters the face. We recommend a visit to the barber for newcomers. The most popular styles include the pencil beard, walrus beard and twisted beard.

The pencil beard is the classic mustache. He is comparatively narrow and trimmed accurately, like actor Alexander Skarsgård (46). The walrus beard appears much fuller. As with its animal namesake, the long whiskers hang over the corners of the mouth. A well-known wearer is handball legend Heiner Brand (70). If you let the bartenders continue to grow, you can twist them à la Horst Lichter (60).

Until then, however, the motto is: be patient. Depending on hair growth and style, it takes about four weeks to reach the desired mustache length and thickness.

If the hair is long enough, you comb it down with a beard comb and cut it off parallel to the upper lip with a beard trimmer or beard scissors. For a straight and even result, follow the shape of the mouth and use the corners of the mouth as a reference. The end is a thorough shave, from which the mustache is excluded.

Once the mustache has been shaped, it can be maintained with a trimmer or scissors. Twist longer variations with some pomade or wax.

It is also worth cleaning your mustache once or twice a week with neutral soap or a beard shampoo. A beard oil ensures suppleness.

The upcoming November offers a good opportunity to try the trend. As part of "Movember," a word created from "mustache" and "November," men grow beards from November 1st through November 30th. The aim of the campaign is to draw attention to typical male diseases such as testicular or prostate cancer. These are still underdiagnosed.
