Climate activist: Greta Thunberg on alcohol and dating: "I would never do anything stupid"

Greta Thunberg has always led a different life than most of her peers. "I was a strange kid," she recently told Vogue. Because of Asperger's Syndrome, she spoke only to her family for a long time. And at least since the now 19-year-old has been the leader of the global climate protection movement, she has been observed by the whole world. That brings with it its own problems: alcohol and dating – completely normal experiences for other teenagers – are difficult topics for the Swede.

In an interview with the British newspaper The Times, Thunberg said she had never been drunk in her life. When asked if she allowed herself a drink as part of her surprise performance at Glastonbury earlier this year, she replied: "I would never go out for a drink."

"I would never do anything stupid – I don't know if I'm not the type of person for it or if I just don't want to be seen. Maybe both," Thunberg continued. She also doesn't want anyone to brag about being the first person to get Greta Thunberg drunk.

The climate activist has the same thoughts when it comes to dating. Flirting is apparently anything but easy for a prominent person like her: "When I approach someone, I'm more vulnerable, so you have people who look up to you, but you're also much more vulnerable," said Thunberg in the interview. Problems that other celebs who found fame in their teens are also struggling with. However, she has not yet sought an exchange on this topic with Billie Eilish, for example, says Thunberg: "There are very few who experience fighting at the base and at the same time being pursued by the paparazzi."

However, she only needed bodyguards once in her life – the reason was Donald Trump. The former US President tweeted in 2019 after Thunberg's speech at the United Nations: "She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see." The teenager then received death threats and was escorted by bodyguards for a few days.

In the stern interview, the high school student also gave an insight into her private life and said that she lives in a shared apartment with friends in Stockholm: "Most of them are from the climate movement. But to be honest, the apartment is not particularly big. There is only one bedroom, although there's always at least three of us. But I have my own couch that I sleep on."
