Five people have been seriously injured and 17 slightly injured in the crash that occurred between a freight train and a passenger train in Vila-seca (Tarragona). The accident occurred this Sunday night around 9:50 p.m., according to EP.

Renfe has reported in a statement that a freight locomotive hit a Rodalies de Catalunya regional train that made the Barcelona - Tortosa (Tarragona) route.

Adif has explained through Twitter that the collision was due to a fault in the brake of the freight locomotive, and the investigation is still open to clarify the facts. As a result of the breakdown, the driver would have passed a red traffic light, entering the track where the passenger train was circulating.

According to some information, still unconfirmed, the driver gave notice of the breakdown, but it was impossible both to divert the train to another track and to warn the driver of the passenger train.

The circulation of trains on lines R15, R16 and R17 between Tarragona and Reus (Tarragona) has been restored on one track this Monday around 6 am after being interrupted overnight due to the accident; the other track remains inoperative while work continues to remove the injured Regional.

The five seriously injured people were transferred by the Emergency Medical System (SEM) to the Tarragona hospitals of Santa Tecla and Joan XXIII and the minor injuries to the centers of Salou, Cambrils and Vila-seca (Tarragona); seven people were treated and discharged 'in situ'.
