A hair is a hair

In April, we do not discover a thread, and in May, we let our hair grow!

Shorts, tank tops, skirts and dresses are out and that's good, because the Maipoils event invites women, men and non-binary people to let their hair grow throughout the month of May.

For women, good weather often rhymes with the urgency of shaving, waxing, doing everything to have smooth-looking skin, a question of feeling presentable in society. All this time wasted trying to control its hairiness would it make us miss part of the summer?

And you, dear Quebecers, would you be ready to let your hair grow?

Questioning our perception

Whether we shave or not, whether we wax or not, in May, we should take the opportunity to ask ourselves questions about our perception of women's hair.

Why can women's hair seem more disgusting to us than men's? Is it normal that we tolerate the hairiness of women less than that of men?

For too long, we have demonized women's hair. Thus, their freedom to make decisions without fear of judgment regarding their hairiness has been hindered.

Down with this double standard!

What a breath of fresh air to see women with hairy legs! It really does me good to see a woman's hair dancing to the rhythm of the air currents in the subway, to see armpit hair shining in the sun in a park.

Men enjoy great freedom regarding their hairiness. In 2022, the time has come to put an end to this double standard and to offer the same I-don't-care-at-care attitude to women's hair so that they really have the choice to do with it what they want.

Because between you and me, it grows on any body, a hair is a hair.
