Phil Foden is disappointed with his World Cup wildcard role

England international Phil Foden has admitted he is frustrated at not being a regular starter for the England side.

Foden, who has been part of the national team for several years despite being only 22, has only started in one of England's three World Cup games: the 3-0 win against Wales, in which he also scored his first World Cup goal scored.

With Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Manchester City team-mate Jack Grealish competing for the same positions in the squad, Foden has often been used as a substitute in recent games. However, the midfielder insists he is a team player and will serve his country in whatever role he is assigned.

"It's been up and down," Foden told BBC Sport. "I'm disappointed that I can't start more games but that's part of the tournament. I'm a team player and if I get a chance I'll take it."

Foden hopes his goal against Wales will be enough to earn him a second consecutive start when the Three Lions meet Senegal in the round of 16.
