Floods: Southern Italy hit again by storms

A good week after the heavy rainfall and landslides on the island of Ischia with at least eleven dead, southern Italy was again hit by storms at the weekend. The fire brigades were in constant use.

Footage from areas such as the province of Crotone in Calabria showed emergency services using inflatable boats on completely flooded roads. People were brought to safety, the storms caused severe damage to property. Initially, no injuries were reported.

Civil protection followed the development with a crisis team and tweeted on Sunday afternoon that there were landslides and mudslides in Sicily and roads were blocked. Floods and hurricanes have been reported from Calabria and Apulia. In the Aeolian Islands area between Sicily and Calabria there was a 4.6 magnitude earthquake in the morning, which did not cause any damage.

On the island of Ischia, several hundred residents from the areas still at risk spent the nights on Saturday and Sunday in hotels or with relatives. They were brought to safety on Friday because the authorities could not guarantee that the new rain would not lead to further landslides. At the end of last week, heavy mud and debris fell from slopes on the north side of the island, taking buildings and cars with them in the town of Casamicciola. Eleven people - including a newborn and three other children - died. A woman remained missing.

Meteorologists predicted that the bad weather front could move further north. In Venice, some flood protection gates were extended on Sunday night due to a flood warning. The system called "Mose" with a total of 78 mobile flaps at three sea entrances to the lagoon city can ensure that it is not flooded during high tide.
