Hans-Christian Ströbele: Green politician is dead

Hans-Christian Ströbele died at the age of 83. The "taz" announced the death of its co-founder on its website. "On Tuesday morning, Christian died in his apartment in Moabit on the banks of the Spree," it said. His last years were determined by serious illnesses, "although it was a miracle how mentally alert and in a good mood he remained despite these illnesses. We will miss him, miss him very much. Everyone is unique, but he was one of the few who are not really replaceable".

Ströbele was a lawyer and politician of the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen party. From 2002 he was in the Bundestag with the direct mandate for Berlin-Kreuzberg and defended it for four legislative periods. From 2002 to 2009 he was deputy chairman of the parliamentary group. In the 2017 federal election, he did not stand for health reasons. From the start, Ströbele belonged to the left wing of the Greens and was one of the so-called "fundamentalists".

Members of the party have already commented on the death of Hans-Christian Ströbele on social media. Green boss Omid Nouripour (47) tweeted: "I'm losing a wonderful ex-office neighbor from whom I learned so much about critical, substantial and respectful discourse. Hans-Christian, rest in peace." Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (56) wrote on Twitter: "Hans-Christian Ströbele was a combative, often controversial fighter for his convictions. For me, he was always fair even in the conflict. There is a great fighter for the green cause. He is missing."
