After the pilots' strike: Lufthansa and pilots - no new negotiations for the time being

After the first wave of strikes, there are no new negotiations between Lufthansa and its pilots for the time being. So far, neither concrete appointments nor an improved offer have been received, said a spokesman for the Vereinigung Cockpit union in Frankfurt on Monday. A company spokeswoman emphasized Lufthansa's basic willingness to talk, but also did not name any specific dates.

A second wave of strikes could probably only be prevented with renewed talks. On Friday last week, more than 800 flights with 130,000 affected passengers were canceled due to the all-day pilot strike. According to Lufthansa, it suffered damage of 32 million euros. Flight operations at the Frankfurt and Munich hubs quickly stabilized again on Saturday.

Before the labor court in Munich, VC changed its collective bargaining claim in one detail. Because the judges also expressed legal concerns about automatic inflation compensation from next year, a "flat-rate" inflation compensation of 8.2 percent is now being demanded. In the current year, salaries are expected to increase by 5.5 percent. There would also be a new salary scale and more money for sick days, holidays and training.

The ground staff only went on strike in July

According to Lufthansa, the combined VC requirements would increase personnel costs in the cockpit by 40 percent. The additional burden would therefore amount to around 900 million euros over a period of two years. Even without considering the financial consequences of the Corona crisis, this is beyond justifiable, the highly indebted company said.

It was only in July that the Verdi union almost paralyzed flight operations at Germany's largest airline with a one-day warning strike by ground staff. The flight attendants' union Ufo wants to negotiate for its members in the fall. It declared its "express and unreserved solidarity" with the pilots' strike.
