After losing the cup final, the German table tennis champion Borussia Düsseldorf is also threatened with losing the Champions League against TTC Neu-Ulm. Timo Boll's team lost the first leg of the semifinals to their new rivals 3-2 on Wednesday evening. The second game will take place in Düsseldorf on Sunday. In the second semi-final, 1. FC Saarbrücken won 3-1 at Post-SV Mühlhausen on Tuesday evening.

With the exception of the Taiwanese Lin Yun-Ju, the Neu-Ulmer fielded all the stars they had specially signed for the Champions League and the cup competition before this season. In the decisive fifth game, Olympic bronze medalist Dimitrij Ovtcharov defeated individual European champion Dang Qiu in 3:1 sets.

World number four Tomokazu Harimoto from Japan scored the first point against Dang Qiu. In addition, Vice World Champion Truls Moregardh from Sweden won again against Timo Boll in a new edition of the 2021 World Cup semifinals. Swede Anton Källberg scored both Düsseldorf points against Ovtcharov and Harimoto.

So far, the Düsseldorf team has won the Champions League and the previous competition, the European Cup, six times. Neu-Ulm is only allowed to take part in the most important European club competition because of a wild card. Ovtcharov and Co. already won the cup final against Borussia 3-0 in January.
