Portugal has kept frozen since March a property valued at 10 million euros that the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich has in the southern part of the Algarve, and that an attempt was made to sell two weeks before the invasion of Ukraine, according to the Portuguese newspaper Público.

The property registry of the property, which is located in the Quinta do Lago, has been frozen since March 25 at the request of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The alert was triggered after a British citizen requested a 5 million euro credit to buy the property, owned by Millhouse Views LLC, a company based in the United States, on February 9.

The operation caught the attention of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), which later verified that the company belonged to Abramovich's business network and alerted the Judicial Police.

The oligarch, with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the European Union on March 15, which determines to freeze his assets and prevents citizens and companies from the community bloc from making funds available to him.

Since then, the former owner of Chelsea has been forced not only to sell the football club but has also seen his superyacht Luna, valued at more than 300 million euros, seized and moored in the port of Hamburg. by order of the German government

Those sanctioned are also subject to a ban on travel, entry or transit through EU territories.

Even so, Roman Abramovich could enter Portugal because he has had nationality since last year, which he obtained through a law that grants the Portuguese passport to descendants of Sephardic Jews.

The granting of nationality to the oligarch is involved in controversy and under investigation, due to alleged irregularities with the certificates that proved that ancestry.

Abramovich's certificate was issued by the Israeli Community of Porto, whose rabbi, Daniel Litvak, was arrested as part of this investigation.
