During the reactor disaster in Chernobyl in 1986, numerous radioactive substances were released, including the isotope cesium-137. Large amounts of the radiating particles reached Germany with the wind and are mainly deposited in southern Bavaria and the Bavarian Forest. The pollution there is around ten times higher than in northern Germany.
