Berlin: Deadly police operation: man kills woman with ax – officials open fire

In Berlin, the police shot dead a man on Sunday morning. As reported by the police, the officers were called to an apartment on Löwenberger Strasse in the Lichtenberg district at around 7:50 a.m. When officers got there, they saw a man hitting a woman with an axe. The officers grabbed the service weapon and shot the man.

As the "Berliner Kurier" reports, the operation took place on the ninth floor of a ten-storey apartment building. There, the man and the 27-year-old woman, who is said to be from Ukraine, are said to have argued loudly beforehand. When neighbors heard how much the woman was screaming, they called the police.

The officers then violently entered the apartment and fired shots at the attacker, who was fatally injured. The woman also succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

As the Berlin police tweeted, the identities of the two parties involved are still unclear. The homicide commission has started the investigation, it is said.

The head of the German police union in Berlin, Bodo Pfalzgraf, spoke up on Twitter after the operation: "Such operations show how dangerous my colleagues live every day. The emergency services only have the firearm as a last resort because we have other effective means such as the Tasers, being withheld by politics."

Only three weeks ago there was a fatal police operation in Dortmund. There a policeman had shot a 16-year-old refugee. The teenager died in hospital. The shooter is currently under investigation for bodily harm resulting in death.
