Football: Application for the 2027 Women's World Cup "big challenge"

The German Football Association has high hopes in its joint bid with the Netherlands and Belgium for the 2027 Women's World Cup. The DFB has now found a strong competitor in South Africa. "Obviously it is a big challenge to prevail against this competitor. However, we hope to be able to convince the FIFA Congress with our application," said a DFB statement at the request of the German Press Agency.

FIFA has not yet opened the application process, and a decision on the award is to be made in 2024. South Africa is applying with stadiums for the men's World Cup in 2010. The USA has also expressed an interest in hosting the tournament, and Mexico and Chile could also be other candidates. There has never been a Women's World Cup in either Latin America or Africa.

The World Football Association wants to advance the sport on such continents. And the currently difficult relationship between the DFB and FIFA could also complicate German ambitions according to dpa information.

The DFB is relaxed about the three-year period between the award and the tournament. "Since we want to convince with a sustainable application and enter the application with the existing infrastructure, we do not see this as a disadvantage for us - compared to our competitors," it says.

The next major football event in Germany will take place in 2024 with the men's European Championship. The only time Germany has hosted a women's World Cup was in 2011. In order to further advance the sport after the booming European Championship in 2022 in England, the German association urgently needs a major tournament in the next few years. German venues for a World Cup in 2027 together with the Netherlands and Belgium in the border triangle would be Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Cologne. This year's Women's World Cup will be held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20th to August 20th.
