The British band Coldplay has expressed their solidarity with the system-critical demonstrations in Iran with the help of a well-known protest song.

There are many places in the world where people are not free, "especially at the moment in Iran," said singer Chris Martin at a concert in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, as recordings showed. "We would like to do something to show that we support all the women and everyone who is fighting for freedom in Iran and everywhere."

The band then performed the song "Baraye" (For) on Friday evening (local time). At first only the recording of the Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour could be heard, then the actress Golshifteh Farahani joined in on the stage in Buenos Aires. "The song is in Persian, so I can't really sing it," Martin said just beforehand, as seen in a YouTube video. "But we'll sing it together."

"Baraye" is considered the unofficial anthem of the protests in Iran that have been going on since the end of September. In the song, Hajipour sums up the demands of the mainly young protesters musically. "For the longing for a normal life, for dancing in the streets, for kissing without fear, for rusty heads," parts of the song read. The 25-year-old singer became known across the country almost overnight. He was later arrested by the Iranian judiciary, but initially released on bail.

The band Coldplay concludes their world tour for the album "Music of the Spheres" in Buenos Aires.
