Poll: Carnival and Mardi Gras as Unesco cultural heritage?

Should carnival and carnival become a worldwide UNESCO cultural heritage? A good quarter of Germans (28 percent) answered this question with yes, as determined by the opinion research institute Yougov. Almost half of those surveyed (47 percent) are against such an award, 25 percent made no statement, as Yougov announced on Friday.

German carnival officials had announced this week that they wanted to include carnival and carnival on the Unesco list of intangible cultural heritage. "It's about securing the complex of Fastnacht, Fasching and carnival customs for posterity and future generations," said the President of the German Carnival Association, Klaus-Ludwig Fess. According to him, the application for the UNESCO world list should be submitted in spring 2023. The BDK represents a good 5,300 clubs and guilds with more than 2.6 million carnival and carnival people.
