Emergencies: Fire in nursing home: 49-year-old resident dies

After a fire in a retirement home in Berlin, a 49-year-old resident died. Another resident aged 67 was fatally injured by smoke inhalation, the fire brigade and police said. The fire started in a room on the second floor of the old people's and nursing home on Neubrandenburger Strasse in the Neu-Hohenschönhausen district. It was quickly deleted.

The men were initially rescued from the smoke-filled room by the fire department, a spokesman said. Paramedics and emergency doctors initiated resuscitation measures, the two men were taken to a hospital, where one died.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The fire department received the alarm at 9:28 a.m. "The first attempts by the nursing staff to extinguish the fire were able to prevent the fire from spreading more widely," said the fire brigade. The triggering of the alarm by smoke detectors and the closing of the fire protection doors by the staff worked perfectly, said the spokesman.

Shortly after the alarm, around 100 firefighters were on duty and extinguished the flames. Residents of the corresponding wing of the building had to move to other parts. The smoky rooms were then ventilated.
