Canadians are poised to qualify for Qatar 2022

Canada vs. USMNT Score: USA soccer fails to qualify for the World Cup.

The men's team of the United States hoped to look sharper in Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Canada than they did on Thursday's 1-0 win over El Salvador. They were worse. They looked worse. In the fifth minute of extra time, Sam Adekugbe scored the second goal on the counter.

While the U.S. is still in a strong position to make it to this year’s World Cup, the result does two things. It adds to the pressure of next week's clash against Honduras and raises questions about whether this young team has enough to consistently be good.

Gregg Berhalter's team managed 13 shots total, five more than Canada's, but not of high quality. Except for a Weston McKennie header at the end of the first half, visitors didn't produce anything substantial, especially in the second half. With just three minutes remaining, a Paul Arriola bicycle kick looked very close but was missed in the end.

The U.S. ended with an xG score of 0.78, which was their third-worst result in this qualifying cycle. All three of their worst attacks in terms xG were on the road.

Gyasi Zardes won the striker position over Ricardo Pepi, but it didn't work out. The Columbus Crew man finished with an xG just 0.05 in 69 min. Pepi, however, finished with an xG 0.12 in 21 minutes and recorded two shots to Zardes' 1. American star Christian Pulisic had another match to remember, recording an xG score of 0.18 on three shots after he was repeatedly hacked to death by Canadian tactical fouls.
