Formula 1: Tire test training in Austin: Leclerc in front

Charles Leclerc turned the fastest lap in the second free practice session on the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

The Ferrari driver from Monaco relegated Valtteri Bottas from Finland in the Alfa Romeo to second place in this time's 90-minute session. Third was Daniel Ricciardo in the McLaren on the course in Austin, Texas.

Mick Schumacher finished fifth in the Haas, two places ahead of the old and new Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen from the Netherlands from Red Bull. Sebastian Vettel was 19th in the Aston Martin.

However, the informative value of the training before the US Grand Prix on Sunday (9 p.m. CEST/Sky) was even less than usual. The reason for this was that almost all drivers were testing tires for the coming season from exclusive outfitter Pirelli.

The only exceptions were those whose car had been driven by young drivers in the first unit, like Leclerc. Contrary to the tires that are otherwise used, the prototypes in the second unit were not marked in color either. Information on the mixture was therefore not available in each case.
