Telecommunications: Mobile data growth remains strong

The rapid data growth in German mobile networks has continued this year. Telefónica's O2 network transported around 2.5 billion gigabytes in the first nine months, 50 percent more than in the same period last year, as the company announced in Munich. Telefónica had already recorded the same percentage growth in 2021. Telekom also reported data growth of 50 percent over the year to date, with Vodafone up 34 percent.

"With the end of the corona-related restrictions in 2022, the thirst for data among consumers and companies will increase again significantly," said Markus Haas, CEO of Telefónica Germany. "End consumers are increasingly using streaming services, companies are increasingly relying on networked machines and virtual meetings for employees."

The fact that 5G is being used more and more also plays a role. This radio standard, the expansion of which is progressing well in Germany, transmits large amounts of data much faster than its predecessor 4G.
