Formula 1: This is how the new Sprint Shootout works in Formula 1

For the first time in Formula 1, a so-called sprint shootout will take place this Saturday (10:30 a.m. / Sky) in Baku. This is the qualification for the sprint races, which was only approved during the week. Unlike in qualifying for a Grand Prix, the knockout rounds are somewhat shorter: the first elimination phase lasts only twelve minutes instead of 18, the second ten minutes instead of 15 and the third eight minutes instead of ten.

The shorter travel time should increase the chances of surprises at the premiere before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It can also happen that on certain tracks only one fast lap can be driven in the final Q3.

It is firmly stipulated which tires may be used in the individual phases. Q1 and Q2 are contested with medium tires, the fast soft tires may only be fitted in the grand finale. Only sets of new tires may be used - one per segment.

On the current six sprint weekends this season, Saturday will be completely separate from the main race on Sunday. In the sprint shootout, the starting order is determined first, there is no training for this. Accidents or defects no longer affect the more important Grand Prix. There are eight World Championship points for the sprint winner, another seven drivers can take something countable with them. The Grand Prix winner tells 25 points.
