Lessons: Warning strike: Many students can stay at home

The planned major strike in the transport sector on Monday will also have an impact on schoolchildren in several federal states. In Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the children could stay at home under certain conditions, the ministries of culture said. In Bavaria there is a special regulation for schoolchildren who cannot come to school because of canceled buses and trains: "You can stay at home on Monday," said Minister of Education Michael Piazolo (free voters) of the German Press Agency.

In Baden-Württemberg, too, schoolchildren are allowed to stay away from class under certain conditions. There is the possibility – similar to a sick note – to stay away from class, the Ministry of Education explained.

Nationwide warning strikes in long-distance, regional and S-Bahn traffic on the rails, at many German airports, waterways and ports as well as motorways have been announced for Monday. The railway and transport union (EVG) and Verdi are fighting for more income in different collective bargaining rounds.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, on the other hand, children have to go to school despite warning strikes. "School will take place next Monday," said the Ministry of Education. Lessons should also go according to plan at the Brandenburg schools. However, students who are dependent on school transport can be exempted from face-to-face teaching.

In Berlin, children are not allowed to stay at home. In Lower Saxony and Bremen, the Easter holidays start on Monday.
