Energy: EU summit still sees risks in energy supply

The heads of state and government of the EU states continue to see the risk of energy shortages. The situation in the EU has improved, according to a statement adopted at the EU summit on Thursday. Nevertheless, the EU Commission and the member states should make provisions for the next heating period. They also called on companies to use the new platform for joint gas purchases.

Against the background of the Russian attack on Ukraine and as a result of the sharp rise in energy prices, the EU Commission had proposed filling the gas storage facilities in a coordinated manner this year. The concentrated market power of the EU should ensure lower prices. It is also intended to prevent the EU states from outbidding each other, as they did last year.

According to the will of the heads of state and government, the reform of the European electricity market recently proposed by the Commission should be decided by the end of the year. The Commission's proposal provides relief primarily through long-term contracts for electricity generation from renewable energies and nuclear power.
