Complaint rejected: Due to internal disputes: Bremer AfD excluded from the general election in May

The Bremen AfD is not allowed to take part in the state elections on May 14th. On Thursday, the Bremen state election committee rejected complaints from the party against the rejection of two competing AfD candidate lists by the Bremen electoral area committee and classified them as inadmissible. According to the state returning authority, the decision is final and cannot be further appealed.

The state election committee for the federal state of Bremen initially did not allow one of the two competing lists of the AfD to participate in the state elections on May 14 for formal reasons. The decision concerned the election proposal submitted by a so-called emergency board for the divided state association. The invitation to the nomination meeting for the candidates did not comply with the regulations, the committee found on Thursday. It was only published in the newspaper "Weser-Kurier" in November 2022; not all party members were reached.

The national association of the party is divided. Two competing executives claim to represent the party. In the Bremen electoral area, the board members each submitted their own list of candidates for the election, which is not permitted.

The electoral committee responsible for the Bremen electoral area therefore refused admission to both lists last week. Both board members have lodged complaints, which are now being decided by the state electoral committee. The committee is also dealing with a complaint by the Bremerhaven electoral director against the approval of an AfD list in his area. According to the Bremen State Electoral Committee, decisions of the state election committee are final and cannot be contested further.
