Music: Die Toten Hosen give a benefit concert for earthquake relief

The Toten Hosen are hoping for donations of one million euros at their planned benefit concert for the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria. "Unfortunately, we are not doctors, firefighters or civil protection types, but we can get people together with what we have, we can collect money, and that is needed in these areas," said frontman Campino of the German Press Agency. At the concert on Friday in Düsseldorf, Toten Hosen will also be supported by the band Donots and singer Thees Uhlmann.

According to a statement by Toten Hosen, the musicians want to "put a small sign of sympathy and solidarity together and help alleviate the suffering as best they can". All proceeds after deducting production costs go to the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and Medico International.

It's going to be a wild rock concert

"With everyone who comes into the hall tomorrow and bought a ticket, we've made a difference," Campino told dpa. According to the band, the 10,500 available tickets were sold out within 60 seconds - so the punk rockers were able to transfer 600,000 euros to the organizations for earthquake aid. The band is hoping for a total of over one million euros in donations.

At the concert on Friday evening, all the musicians waive their fees, and many employees also donate their wages. The city of Düsseldorf made the hall available for the concert free of charge. "Of course, as a city, we are very happy to support this, an outstanding initiative," said Mayor Stephan Keller (CDU) on Thursday.

Despite the sad occasion, it should be a rock concert. "We're not the band for contemplative hours," said Campino. "It's going to be a rock concert, that's for sure. It's going to be loud and wild. That's how we express ourselves and that's how it will sound from the speakers tomorrow."
