First the tennis legend, then the star entrepreneur: Alex Gibney (69) has been working on a documentary about Boris Becker (55) that will be released in a few weeks. Now there is a documentary about Elon Musk (51), the man behind Tesla, Twitter and SpaceX. The Oscar winner's new documentary has been in production for several months, reports the industry magazine Variety.
Gibney has now announced the project and is very excited about tackling a film about Musk. The documentary is described as a "definitive and unvarnished investigation of the multi-billionaire tech entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, Spacex and Twitter."
"Now is the moment for a rigorous portrait of Elon Musk, who is undeniably one of the most influential figures of our time," Zhang Xin is quoted as saying by Closer Media, who are involved in the production. The business magazine "Forbes" currently ranks Musk second on its list of billionaires - ahead of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (59, third place) and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates (67, sixth place). Musk has made headlines in recent months with his takeover of short message service Twitter for $44 billion.
It is not yet known where the film will be shown. Director and screenwriter Gibney, who owns the production company Jigsaw Productions, has released numerous documentaries in recent years. Among other things, he wrote "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room", "We Steal Secrets: The WikiLeaks Story" and "Taxi to Hell" (Oscar for "Best Documentary").
The project may end up in the hands of Apple TV. Gibney's two-part documentary series "Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker", which celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale, will be shown worldwide on the streaming service from April 7th.
The documentary filmmaker and his team had access to Becker for more than three years, who has also given several face-to-face interviews - including one the week before his sentencing. The former tennis star was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in England in April 2022 for delaying bankruptcy and was released at the end of the year. You can also see conversations with family members and other tennis icons, including John McEnroe (64), Novak Djokovic (35) and Michael Stich (54).
