Antonio Hernández-Gil, secretary of the board of directors of The English Court and exdecano of the College of Lawyers of Madrid (ICAM) has died on Tuesday, suddenly, at age 66. A lawyer by profession, born in Burgos in 1953, was for five years, between 2007 and 2012, head of the College of Lawyers of Madrid and currently compaginaba his position of secretary of the council of the department store chain with the address of the law firm Hernández-Gil.

The funeral chapel will take place in the courtyard of the Library of the ICAM from three in the afternoon of this Wednesday and Thursday there will be a mass prior to the burial, as reported by the ICAM.

having achieved a Law degree in 1974 at the Complutense university and a doctorate in 1976, he was a professor in the university itself and at the UNED. Since then, she has combined the exercise of the teaching profession with the law (specializing in civil and commercial law), and, soon, with his presence on various boards of directors. Thus, from 1988 to 2003 belonged to the board of directors of Banco Zaragozano and from 1996 to 2008 he was a member of the board of directors of Repsol YPF. From 2003 to 2014 he was part of the board of directors of Barclays Bank.

From 2014, was the secretary of the board of directors of El Corte ingles and other companies of the group, in addition to being secretary of the Board of trustees of the Ramón Areces Foundation. Close to Isidoro Álvarez, foster-father of the current president of the group, Marta Alvarez, and the former's uncle, Dimas Gimeno, has remained as secretary during the presidency of this until August of this year, when the eldest of the sisters Álvarez assumed the position. At the time of choosing, he remained on the side of the Alvarez. Although he was not a member of the council, from his post he became senior advisor to the group on legal matters.

From 1981 to 2005 in successive elections formed part of the governing Board of the Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Madrid, and in December 2007 was elected, for a term of five years, dean of the Illustrious College of Lawyers of Madrid. He was also first vice-president of the General Council of Spanish Lawyers and a member of Honor of the Illustrious and National College of Lawyers of Mexico. In 2017, was awarded with the prize Pelayo Lawyers of Prestige.
