The diagnosis: The doctors initially suspect gluten intolerance – but then the patient suddenly hears voices

Sometimes the diagnosis of one condition can lead to a second going undetected for a long time. This is what happened to an 18-year-old patient who came to our clinic for the first time one fall. A few months earlier she had developed severe abdominal pain. The young woman, who had been perfectly healthy up to that point, had studied for her Abitur in early summer, and at the same time she was preparing for a big performance at school and played the violin in the orchestra. She initially blamed the symptoms on her stress. But then she often vomited and sometimes lay hunched over in bed with unbearable stomach pains.
