Tariff conflict: Strike started in Belgium - railway line to Cologne affected

A general strike began in Belgium on Wednesday night. Far-reaching restrictions are expected across the country, including at airports, railways and hospitals. According to the Belgian railways, only every fourth train should run. According to Deutsche Bahn, some train connections between Cologne and Brussels are also canceled.

Air traffic has also been severely affected by the strike. More than half of the flights were canceled at Brussels Airport. No flights are scheduled at Charleroi airport south of the capital. In addition, there should be significantly fewer buses, trams and metros than on normal weekdays. The trade unions thus want to put pressure on politicians to take further measures against the increased cost of living and energy costs.

There are also plans to go on strike in many hospitals in the Brussels and Wallonia regions because of critical working conditions. However, emergency care for patients is guaranteed, it said.
