Schools: Minister after von Wunstorf's act: Don't look the other way when it comes to bullying

After the violent death of a 14-year-old in Wunstorf, Lower Saxony's Minister of Education, Julia Willie Hamburg, called for harassment among children not to be ignored. "In the case of violence and bullying, everyone involved must be vigilant and act instead of looking away. It often starts small and everyone can do something: friends, family, acquaintances and those involved in school," said the Green politician in an interview with the "Hannoverschen Allgemeine Zeitung" (Saturday/online). However, she does not want to speculate on the specific case, but rather wait for the clarification.

The body of a dead 14-year-old was found in Wunstorf near Hanover on Wednesday. An arrest warrant for murder was issued against the 14-year-old German suspect. According to the newspaper report, there are allegations of years of bullying in the school.

When asked about this, Minister Hamburg referred to "advice, intervention and supervisory structures" as well as a contact point for victims and for questions of sexual abuse and discrimination in her ministry. "They can be contacted in case of suspicion and incidents. But beyond that, protection against violence and child well-being are issues that are playing an increasingly important role in schools and for which we have to raise awareness more and more," said Hamburg.
