More than three million trees have been planted as part of a British environmental campaign on behalf of the late Queen. King Charles III thanked the people involved in the initiative called "Queen's Green Canopy" (QGC) on the occasion of the end of the campaign on Sunday.

"This project showed how simple, practical and positive gestures can make a big difference," Charles said. "I can think of no more fitting tribute to Her late Majesty's 70 year reign."

Charles, who recently visited Germany, was the patron of the initiative launched in May 2021. It was intended to encourage citizens to plant a tree on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's 70th jubilee and thus create a legacy in her honor. The campaign continued after the Queen's death last September.

The Queen herself planted the first tree of the campaign with Charles on the grounds of Windsor Castle near London. As one of the last trees of the initiative, Charles and his son Prince William planted a maple in the gardens of the royal country estate in Sandringham in east England.
