Energy: Hamburg wants to import synthetic fuels

Hamburg wants to become a central import port for synthetic and climate-friendly fuels from all over the world. From 2026 onwards, as part of the so-called Hamburg Blue Hub, hydrogen-based e-fuels, biofuels, hydrogen and other hydrogen derivatives are to be stored in a climate-friendly manner on the premises of the terminal operator Evos. "We want to develop Hamburg into one of the most important distribution centers for green hydrogen and its derivatives in Europe," said Economics Senator Melanie Leonhard (SPD) on Thursday at the presentation of the project.

According to the information, the first e-fuels are to be picked up and distributed from the Chile project Haru Oni. Annual production is 75 million liters. The aim is to contribute to the decarbonization of air and shipping traffic as well as heavy transport. The basis for this is a cooperation agreement between Evos Hamburg GmbH and the Lother Group.

"The Hamburg Blue Hub is a central project in a chain of necessary projects towards an import port for green hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels in Hamburg," emphasized Leonhard. The Lother Group also wants to operate the first CO2-neutral filling station under its Nordoel brand on the Evos site in 2026. Among other things, e-fuel diesel, e-fuel 95 and racing e-fuel 98, hydrogen and e-methanol are to be offered there.
