Hamburg's environment senator Jens Kerstan has shown understanding for civil disobedience in climate protests. "If you stick to all the rules, protests go unnoticed," the Greens politician told the "Bild" newspaper (Tuesday/Hamburg edition). However, he condemned violence and attacks on the police. "When I was young, demos were very different," recalled the 56-year-old. Against this background, he has "great understanding" for actions such as the protest stickers of the group "Last Generation". "What we warned about then is what young people are experiencing today." However, he lacks understanding for some actions: "I don't understand the meaning of pea soup in paintings," said Kerstan.
