Among the Jehovah's Witnesses: Action, victims and perpetrators: what we know about the violent act in Hamburg - and what we don't

Important details about the deadly shots at the community of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hamburg have been clarified, some are still unclear. Above all, there is still the question of the exact motive for the crime. At a press conference, the investigators announced details of the crime with several deaths.

Shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, several shots were fired in a Jehovah's Witnesses building. According to the community's website, one of the two weekly meetings takes place there on Thursdays at 7 p.m. From 9:04 p.m., the police were informed by numerous calls about the shots. Police forces are at the scene of the crime in four minutes and hear another shot on the upper floor of the building, where they also find a fatally injured person.

The detailed timing of the shots is not yet entirely clear. Statements and videos from residents provide evidence of this. According to a local resident, multiple shots were fired four times. The video of a local resident also shows that a person dressed in black shoots through a broken window several times from the outside of the building and finally gets into the house and continues to shoot inside.

According to police, the perpetrator killed seven people, including an unborn 28-week-old child. The mother survived with serious injuries. The fatalities are four men, two women and the unborn girl. The men and women are between 33 and 60 years old. The fatalities had German nationality. Eight people were also injured, four of them seriously. After the police arrived, the perpetrator pointed the gun at himself and killed himself.

The perpetrator Philipp F. is a 35-year-old German who came from Bavaria. The banker was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses in the past but left the community a year and a half ago. The man was not related to the victims of the shooting. He was a marksman and has been legally allowed to own a semi-automatic pistol since December 2022, which was also the murder weapon. A large amount of ammunition was found in his apartment, which was searched just after midnight - 15 loaded magazines each containing 15 rounds and 4 boxes of ammunition containing a further 200 rounds.

According to information from security circles, the alleged gunman was not known to the authorities as an extremist. According to reports, the fact that his name appeared in the databases of the security authorities has no criminal background, but is due to his application for a gun permit.

According to information from security circles, the Hamburg police classified the shots fired during an event of Jehovah's Witnesses as an amok act. It is initially unclear why the perpetrator fired. However, according to investigators, there are indications that he did not leave the community on good terms.
