Report: Qatar buys Oranje fans

Apparently Qatar is doing a lot to be a good host during the World Cup. Among other things, foreign fans are "bought" to make the desert state appear in a good light.

The Dutch medium NOS reports that Qatar has bought 50 fans of the Dutch national team for the World Cup - the supporters will therefore have their flights and accommodation paid for by the desert state and in return have committed themselves to complying with a code of conduct during the tournament. The document is available to NOS.

The Oranje fans commit to making a "positive contribution" to the World Cup on social media and to reporting insulting comments from other users. That means: The group acts as an influencer during the tournament in order to present the World Cup in the best possible light. If the fans violate the agreement, they can be fired by the state - in which case they would have to pay for all expenses themselves.

"The camera will zoom in on our group dressed in orange at the opening," Leon van der Wilk, who is coordinating the trip on behalf of the Dutch fans, told NOS.

A supporter, whose name is not given in the report, said: "The accommodation is just way too expensive, we as regular fans can't afford it." That's why he agreed to the agreement. Although he is critical of Qatar as a venue, he doesn't seem to have any major moral concerns: "If you start thinking like that, you have nowhere to go."

In general, most of the group's fans seem to justify the deal with the fact that the Dutch Football Association has decided to take part in the World Cup - they support this decision as loyal individual fans. And take advantage of the bonus of a free trip.

However, there are fans in the Netherlands who have turned down the Qataris' offer. "We are fans of the Dutch national team, but not this World Cup. The temptation to accept it was great. You get a free flight and accommodation and you can go to the opening game. But the fact that we have a document with all sorts of obligations and restrictions had to sign it was the last straw for us," explained Orange supporter Paul Hirschel, for example. "We don't want to be a figurehead for Qatar." Unfortunately, not all of his compatriots see it that way.
