Marco Reus' time at Borussia Dortmund ends in the summer. BVB will not extend the expiring contract with the 34-year-old professional. Reus announced this in a short video that was recorded in Signal Iduna Park. "Dear BVB fans, I was able to play in this beautiful stadium for twelve years. I have dedicated half my life to this club. With ups and downs. But there were more ups in my opinion. The club and I have now come to the decision "Not to extend the contract," said Reus, visibly touched in the video.

Reus has been playing for BVB since 2012 after returning to his hometown and his training club from Borussia Mönchengladbach. The attacker celebrated his greatest success in Dortmund by winning the DFB Cup in 2021. Reus scored 168 goals in 424 games for BVB. These numbers can still change between now and the end of the season. "Marco Reus is one of the greatest players in this club. He was born in Dortmund, played in our youth team for almost ten years, was with the professionals for twelve years and was the captain of our team for a long time. His connection to Borussia Dortmund is extraordinary," said managing director Hans -Joachim Watzke.

In terms of sport, Reus recently no longer played a role under coach Edin Terzic. Against this background, the end of his time in Dortmund comes as no surprise. Since the end of the winter break, the second-best goalscorer in the club's history has mostly had to make do with being a reserve player. Not least because of this, the relationship between the 34-year-old veteran and Terzic is considered tense. Many observers interpret the coach's treatment of the 48-time national player as a gradual phase-out. The former BVB captain has not yet expressed public criticism of Terzic.

It is not clear whether the end of his contract in Dortmund also means the end of Reus' career. Recently there were rumors that the Dortmund player could move to Major League Soccer in the USA to end his career there.
