At the beginning of February, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen plans to travel to Kyiv for the EU-Ukraine summit. This is probably one of the reasons why President Volodymyr Zelenskyj started a kind of campaign against corruption this week. He dismissed 15 high-ranking civil servants within a few days in a publicly effective manner. Most are now under investigation for corruption. "Ukrainians have been waiting for this moment for a long time," says Yuri Nikolov, who has uncovered many corruption scandals as a journalist over the past 20 years. "For the first time, high-ranking politicians are being prosecuted and not petty scapegoats. The president is sending a clear message: the era of corruption is over."
