Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have until the summer to pack their things to leave Frogmore Cottage in Windsor to Uncle Prince Andrew. King Charles III's decision to strip the Sussexes of their British home sparked debate a few weeks ago.
One group found Charles' decision only sensible, after all, Meghan and Harry are no longer working royals. The others assessed the decision as a petty act of revenge.
Now Frogmore Cottage is part of the coverage again. As the "Mail on Sunday" explains, Meghan and Harry do not pay rent for the spacious property. Behind it is their expensive renovation, which was originally paid for by taxpayers' money, but which the couple was supposed to pay for themselves after the so-called Megxit. "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made a £2.4million contribution to the Sovereign Grant which covered the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage . They have met their financial obligations in relation to the property," reads a statement.
According to the Mail on Sunday, the two paid five months' rent after stepping down from royal life before paying the full amount.
After Meghan and Harry announced in 2020 that they would step down as senior royals, it was announced that they also want to pay for the renovation costs themselves. All part of their financial independence.
