Brittney Griner and wife Cherelle: "Baby Griner is coming soon"

US basketball star Brittney Griner (33) and her wife Cherelle Griner are looking forward to their first child. The two announced this in a joint Instagram post. You can see ultrasound images and the couple's hands with partner tattoos placed on top of each other. The two write: "It's unbelievable that we are less than three months away from meeting our favorite person." And the hashtags say: “Baby Griner is coming soon” and “July 2024”.

Brittney and Cherelle Griner met more than a decade ago while attending Baylor University from 2009 to 2013 - although they didn't start dating until years later. They got married in June 2019, almost a year after Brittney proposed to Cherelle.

In February 2022, the couple's world was turned upside down after Brittney Griner was jailed on drug charges in Russia - where she was scheduled to play an offseason basketball game. After months in Russian custody and a week-long trial, the WNBA star was sentenced to nine years in prison.

After the verdict was announced, Cherelle reacted to the verdict in an interview with "CBS Mornings" and told Gayle King, 69: "I never thought that our president and the president of another country would sit together and discuss my wife's freedom. " And further: "It scares me because when you watch films, sometimes situations like this don't end well," she said at the time, adding: "Sometimes they never get their person back." Luckily, Cherelle got her person back because Brittney was finally released in December 2022.

Following Brittney's release, Cherelle spoke to People magazine about the relief she felt upon learning that her wife was finally coming home after a months-long ordeal. "I had thought about this moment a thousand times and thought I would be full of tears," she said at the time. "But I was overwhelmingly happy."
