Netflix cancels Meghan Markle's animated series Pearl

In an effort to reduce costs, Netflix cancelled the development of Pearl, an animated series that Meghan Markle had created.

The streaming giant has dropped several shows, including the one that was announced last year.

Netflix warned that millions more subscribers were on the verge of quitting last month.

Experts warned that the company would struggle to recover its market value after this event, which wiped off more than $50bn.

Archewell Productions was the company founded by the Duke and Duchess. Last year, Meghan was announced as the executive producer of Pearl.

The series will focus on the adventures of a 12-year old girl who is inspired by historical women.

Netflix did however confirm that it would continue to work with Archewell Productions on a variety of projects, including a documentary series called Heart of Invictus.

The series will be focused on athletes participating in the Invictus games for injured veterans, which Prince Harry founded in The Hague in 2022.

Archewell Productions didn't immediately respond to a BBC inquiry for comment.

Netflix stated that it would not be moving forward with the animated series for children Dino Daycare and Boons and Curses.

Netflix reported in April that its total subscribers had fallen by 200,000 in the first three month of this year. This is well below its target.

It warned that two million additional users could leave the service within the three months to July.

Analysts warned that the company was out of options for growth after experiencing a period of strong expansion during the pandemic.

To save money, some consumers are cutting back on streaming services. Others feel that there is too many content options in the face of so much competition from Amazon and Disney.
