USA: Potassium cyanide in protein shake: Dentist is said to have poisoned his wife

It was a tip from his business partner and suspicious search queries that made the police suspicious. James C. from the US state of Colorado took his wife to a hospital last week because she was complaining of severe headaches and dizziness. It was the third hospitalization this month. But this time her condition deteriorated rapidly. The woman was transferred to the intensive care unit and put on a ventilator. Shortly thereafter, she was pronounced brain dead, according to Aurora police.

A friend and practice partner of the dentist told a nurse that the woman may have been poisoned. The doctor had ordered potassium cyanide a few days earlier, but there was no reason to have the chemical in a dentist's office. The authorities investigated the suspicion.

As reported by the Associated Press news agency, among others, his Internet history showed YouTube searches such as "Top 5 undetectable poisons that show no signs of third-party influence" or "Is arsenic detectable in an autopsy?". The dentist is said to have given his wife the poison in protein shakes, which he routinely prepared for her training. He told his business partner he ordered the cyanide for his wife and told a social worker that she had been suicidal and depressed since he filed for divorce in December.

The dentist's partner also allegedly told investigators that the suspect was on the verge of bankruptcy and was having problems in his marriage.

Eventually, investigators also found evidence of a romantic relationship with another woman. According to the authorities, the doctor wanted to start a new life with her. He was arrested on suspicion of murder around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning - shortly after doctors had decided to remove his wife from life support.
