Disasters: "Like a volcano": forest fire rages north-east of Bangkok

A forest fire has spiraled out of control northeast of Thailand's capital Bangkok. As the news site "The Thaiger" reported on Thursday, the fire has raged like an "inferno" in a forested area in Nakhon Nayok province since Tuesday. Strong winds would have fueled the flames further and further. At night, Khao Laem Mountain looked like a volcano after a severe eruption.

Among other things, the emergency services wanted to use helicopters and firebreaks to try to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby communities, as the news site "Coconuts Bangkok" quoted the provincial governor Bancha Chaowarin as saying. The cause of the fire could have been a lightning strike, it said.
