Demonstration: Last generation climate group with Schleich demonstration in Berlin

The Last Generation group demonstrated on Friday with a protest march from the Frankfurt Gate in Berlin-Friedrichshain to the Brandenburg Gate for faster climate protection. The police spoke on Twitter of about 200 participants. A police spokeswoman said it was an impromptu gathering. Officials had discussed the route with the organizers. As long as people kept moving, officials would not intervene. According to a dpa reporter, the demonstration moved extremely slowly and blocked all three lanes towards the city center, causing traffic to back up behind them.

In a statement, the group primarily criticized the FDP for blocking climate protection at federal and European level. The Free Democrats have been holding their federal party conference in Berlin since Friday, albeit several kilometers away from the meeting place. The climate movement Fridays for Future has announced protests against the party congress.

Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) has announced that he will be meeting with representatives of the last generation on May 2nd. The activists regularly protest with roadblocks where they tape themselves to the roadway. They are calling for a plan to reach the 1.5 degree target to prevent the worst effects of global warming. They criticize Wissing for not achieving the climate goals in transport.
