Constitutional Court in Portugal rejects legalization of euthanasia

The text of the law is now going back to Parliament, which has been trying to legalize euthanasia for some time, for possible revision. It is in conflict with the conservative and strictly Catholic President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who repeatedly tries to block the project.

A first law to legalize euthanasia was rejected by the constitutional court in March 2021 on the initiative of the president. Parliament then drafted a new text, which Rebelo de Sousa submitted again to the Constitutional Court for review in January. This again said no.
