Ukraine war: Russian diplomat resigns and says he has never been so ashamed of Russia

On Monday, a veteran Russian diplomat in Geneva quit over the conflict in Ukraine.

He wrote that he had seen many different directions in our foreign policy over the twenty-years of his diplomatic career, but he was never so ashamed of his country as on February 24, 2018, referring to Russia's invasion.

In a virtual address to Davos' World Economic Forum on Monday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President, pushed for "maximum sanction" against Russia. This included a full oil embargo and bans on all Russian banks from global systems. Russia should also be completely cut off from international commerce.

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson for the U.N., stated Monday that the U.N. personnel on the ground are still concerned about the impact of the fighting in the eastern Luhansk-Donetsk and Kharkiv areas on civilians.

He stated that people are being injured or killed. The destruction of homes, residential buildings and civil infrastructure has resulted in the loss or destruction of many.

In the government-controlled part of Luhansk, local authorities informed the U.N. that a bridge leading to the administrative center of the region - Sievierodonetsk - was destroyed on May 21. He stated that the only road to reach the city, which was partially enclosed, was one.

Although some people were able to flee Sievierodonetsk this weekend, Dujarric stated that local authorities believe that there are thousands of civilians still living in the war-affected area and need urgent assistance.

U.N. humanitarian staff reported that airstrikes and shelling were also being reported in other parts of Ukraine, including the northern, central, and southern regions. These incidents claimed civilian lives and damaged civilian infrastructure.

Boris Bondarev, a spokesperson for the Kremlin critic in jail, has accepted the resignation.

Kyra Yarmysh stated on Twitter that the Russian adviser to the UN mission had written "The modern Russian Foreign Ministry does not have anything to do with diplomacy but only inciting war, lies, and hatred."

"It appears that there was only one honest person within the entire Ministry of Foreign Affairs."

Azovstal fighters captured to face 'tribunal.'

According to the head of the Russia-backed separatist area in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian fighters from Mariupol's Azovstal steel plant were captured by Russian forces. They are currently being held in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. There they will be facing an "international tribunal".

Interfax quoted Denis Pushilin as saying, "The plan is for the international tribunal to be organized on the territory of republic as well." Pushilin stated that the charter for the tribunal's jurisdiction is still being drafted.

Pushilin stated earlier that 2,439 Azovstal residents were currently in detention, with some foreign citizens as well, but he didn't provide any details.

The relatives of the steel mill fighters came from many military and law enforcement units. They pleaded for their rights as prisoners-of-war and were eventually allowed to return to Ukraine.
