Voted to Bolsonaro, the we interviewed a year ago, we return now to know what they think

“We have to rebuild a nation and what we will do together”, proclaimed a year ago to assume the Presidency of Brazil retired military Jair Bolsonaro, 64 years old, who managed to capitalize on the thirst for change, the anger towards the political class and the weariness with the corruption. The appeal for unity has been nothing. As the president is still installed in the frentismo, puts to the test the democratic institutions, polarization grows and its popularity has not stopped falling, but the economy is slowly recovering and the murders have fallen. At the beginning of his mandate, THE COUNTRY took the pulse of the Brazil of Bolsonaro. We interviewed in various cities to brazilians who voted to illustrate what were their expectations in regard to the pillars of your program (economy, security, corruption, values) to a family that is not voted. (Read here the interviews then). We have returned to visit them to know if they are satisfied or not and what should be the priority of the president Bolsonaro.

This 2019 was prosperous for the family of Ereni Azevedo do Prado. The family home, in Morro da Cruz, on the outskirts of Porto Alegre, which now has a second floor with a panoramic view that had not occurred. The matriarch, of 55 years, who contributed with their votes to the victory of Bolsonaro, he managed to make the reform despite the performance frustrating of the economy-grew by 1% although the expectation a year ago was 2.5%. “For me, the year was very good!”, held in the city with the second basket most expensive in the country.

the renovation of The house was a necessity for the family, who grew up in 2018 with the arrival of a third granddaughter. The grandmother lives with her daughter, 30-year, and three grandchildren. The staircase to the second floor is a pride of the family. When Bolsonaro authorized workers to remove 500 actual (110 euros) for the fund companies to save for them to activate the economy, Azevedo invested in the ladder. “This money came to me in a very good moment,” he says. With over 500 other real that you can take, is intended to pay the debt of the light, which before had thanks to a connection spot.

Pay work to deadlines but do not want to lengthen. Expected to finish in February. And for that, in addition to his employment (with a contract) as a caregiver for an elderly woman, has increased the extras: clean for other and arrange clothing.

Only with the fixed salary did not reach for the reform: “The salary is low and we cannot be content with little. When we work hard, we deserve to win well”, he argues. He therefore asks the president of the Republic that cares more for the working class. “We have a health crisis. And the education is very bad,” he accuses.

Your child Anriel, 25 years, moved to mid-2019 to Santa Catarina, a neighboring state, to work as a driver. “It is also a self-employed, except that here everything is cheaper, life is better.” The less the state taxes, of the gasoline to the beer, everything is cheaper. “I hope that the economy stabilizes a bit more and lower the prices a little bit,” she says.

This family coincides with the minister of Economine, Paulo Guedes, in that it is more important to have some job, even precarious labor rights. “I think that there is only the work that you do not want. I was never without a job, regardless of my wallet,” says the matriarch. Is a year of retiring but he worked so hard last year he didn't even have time to figure out if the landmark pension reform affect their plans.

The couple is convinced that the case of the Friday the 13th that shook Bay and had an impact national endorses the effectiveness of the security policy adopted by Bolsonaro. Friday 13 December 2019 traffickers called five drivers of Uber or apps like, held in a shack, tortured and four were killed. The one who escaped gave the alarm. The bodies were found the same day wrapped in plastic bags. In less than 24 hours, two of the suspects were gunned down by the police. For Rita Paim, a representative pharmaceutical of 52 years, and Sérgio Pretto, a graphic designer for 60 years, that also works as a driver of apps, this “fast-acting” police evidence that Bolsonaro has achieved good results in public safety. “If the police can act, to do its job. Unfortunately, sometimes the community itself is not conducive to the police action, calls for human rights when a criminal does something wrong. But the police need to act, otherwise we can not put it in order. I'm not saying that you have to go out to kill, it is not that.” The couple, upper middle class, lives in Salvador, capital of Bahia, the state with the largest number of deaths by firearms, according to the latest Atlas of Violence.

“I have noticed more police surveillance, more justice, and I feel more secure. The crimes continue, but the numbers show that the crime rate has been reduced ", says the representative pharmaceutical. It is one of the achievements that most exhibits Bolsonaro. Homicides dropped 22% between January and September. Are 6.900 lives preserved. Have fallen also violations, theft of cars, banks...

“The Government of Bolsonaro is doing what must be done in leaps and bounds, but the type does not resolve in a year. It will not solve all the problems, without wanting to name anyone, have been created in the last 16 in Brazil”, he commented in reference to the Governments of the PT.

The speech of the couple seems even more in line with that of the president who for the past nine months. His priority is education: “To solve any problem within 20 years, the solution is education. With people educated and healthy, the violence tends to finish ”.

CORRUPTION (Brasilia)

Da Silva: “Expected to anti-corruption measures over hard”

enlarge photo The dentist and professor Adalcyr Luiz da Silva, in Brasilia. Cadu Gomes

at the beginning of 2019 was asked why he voted to Bolsonaro, the orthodontist 55 years of age and a college professor Adalcyr Luiz da Silva Junior remarked that he was tired of seeing the corrupt system established by previous Governments. Now you are not happy with the anti-corruption fight. “I expected that the measures would be more conclusive. It is early to say that I am not satisfied, but I'm not completely satisfied as I would like,” he explains.

One of their complaints is the lack of support resounding to the operation Lava Jato, that has imprisoned dozens of entrepreneurs, bleach, money, lobbyists, and politicians, including the main antagonist of Bolsonaro, former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. “Of Bolsonaro here, what happens with Lava Jato, for example? If there has been any policy (in Government) has been to decrease its power,” he says. Also complains of the alleged protection of president to his eldest son, the senator Flavio Bolsonaro, investigated for money laundering, embezzlement, and criminal organization.

The professor, who declares himself opposed to any radicalism, sees clear similarities between the administration Bolsonaro and the previous. “What has changed is that one has a thought of right and the other leftist. But the rest is very similar.”

The economic policy, in contrast, likes. “I like Paulo Guedes and I see that you're doing a good job. The Selic interest rate (interest) is low, it is creating some jobs,” he says. And still have some admiration for the minister of justice, the former judge Sergio Moro. “You need to be the superman that said it would be.”

Scores with a four the action of Government. The reason is what he considers a lack of commitment to guide and defend issues of national interest to the Congress. “I thought that this idea of washing their hands, that Congress has to solve it, was a thing of other administrations. My hope is a government that is more active."

The orthodontist expects the Executive to really step up their anti-corruption policies and, above all, invest in education, with a better distribution of resources among the colleges, primary and secondary, and without ideology or partisanship. “I'm not bolsonarista. He for me was an alternative of change. But neither idolatro. If it goes wrong, I begin to manifest myself”. The criticism has already begun.

VALUES (São Paulo)

Galdino: “Satisfied with himself, dissatisfied with the other powers”

enlarge photo The evangelical pastor Marcos Galdino, São Paulo. Lela Beltrão

The evangelical pastor Marcos Galdino Junior, 35 years old, is categorical: “I Am satisfied with the president and unhappy with the Legislature. Because the president is rowing with a lot of force but the Senate, the Congress and the Supreme braking”, explained in the headquarters of the church leading in São Paulo, a subsidiary of the Assembly of God, with 100,000 faithful. Galdino, married, father of three, echoes a view very shared in the hard core of the bolsonarismo, which it considers excessive the power of the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia, to organize the legislative agenda. The anger with the Supreme Court is also deep. “It's a joke, you want to legislate!”, regrets.

Despite the fact that the street protests of bolsonaristas against the other powers of the State have caused institutional concern, although not to the Government, and troubled the UN, Galdino said that “there should be balance of powers. Brazil will not have a military dictatorship”.

That Bolsonaro “desideologice schools”. That was a year ago, his priority for the agenda of values promised in the campaign. Is happy because, in his opinion, the president and his team “are putting the ideology of left-wing” of education and “deriving the money that is allocated to other things, to basic education, without ideology”.

it is Precisely that issue —the idea that education in values is a task for family, not school— has devoted Bolsonaro in this 2020 one of the videos balance sheet that diffuses in social networks and their millions of followers. As he does not like the portrait the major media make their management, it creates its own narrative and serves it directly to their followers. “Thank God there are the social networks because if we are to believe what they say, many days the tv would be believing in fables,” says Galdino.

Despite its constant references to God and praises the traditional family, Bolsonaro has not driven legislative changes promised as to hinder the right to abortion —legal in three assumptions— or to combat the teaching of gender equality, which identifies as “gender ideology”.

If he promised to appoint at least “a judge terribly the gospel for the Supreme”. The pastor said that he would prefer to be “terribly technical, you can be a catholic. What a forward with being evangelical if it's not technical!”. He adds that “sectorizar the powers is not good.” Thanks to the chief Executive, which limited dry an attempt to force the Churches to pay tax on donations, a crucial issue that involves enormous sums of money.

it Also has very clear that the safety must be the priority. “On Sunday killed a parishioner. Was with his wife, tried to steal the car. He was a professor of mathematics,” he said in mid-December. “What do you expect to tighten the laws? The solution is not more police. The law has to be more hard for that input is not delinquent” sentence. The pastor already has an eye on re-election of Bolsonaro.

NOT VOTED (Manaus)

Chaves: “he Says nonsense to distract and follow up with the destruction”

enlarge photo The pair of entrepreneurs Chaves and Kardec, in Manaus. Alberto César Araújo

last year, Ana Claudia Chaves, 39 years, predicted that the government Bolsonaro would not last a year. The Cabinet office has suffered several crises, but it's still there. “It is worn out, but unfortunately there was no impeachment. The puppet Paulo Guedes (minister of Economy) continues saying nonsense to distract the media and continue with the destruction of all that the country has made progress in social and a more just economy in the last decades, " says the entrepreneur. She and her husband, Allan Kardec son, 38 years old, living with her two daughters two dogs and three cats in Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon, did not vote for the far-right, as almost half of Brazil. Your analysis is even more pessimistic than that.

“Look at the environmental issue, which has become a joke internationally, with a chair provided and a warmonger, a minister sued for fines environmental. Want to explore (commercially) indigenous lands. In addition, he has destroyed the boards with representation of the civil society and rule as a dictator”.

The influence of the misinformation they are very concerned. “I think the media should be more assertive in debunking the false stories of this government. Agencies verification of facts are not reaching the groups that are spreading the false news,” he says. Has No doubt that Bolsonaro made this whole “pantomime” to divert the attention of the media of the reform of the pensions or of the planned tax reform. “I find it difficult to understand that the only resistance to Bolsonaro today is not the opposition to pieces, but Rodrigo Maia (president of the Chamber of Deputies)”. She stresses that the opposition should seek unity before the path of Bolsonaro to re-election, begins to consolidate.
